Marcus Welfare was a British Software Developer and Video Game Tester that had worked at Lionhead Studios during his early years in the Video Game Industry and had spent much of that time helping to work on many games for the company, such as Black & White 2, The Movies and even Fable: The Lost Chapters.

It was announced that Marcus Welfare had passed away from a swimming accident on the 18th May, 2006 when he was just 19 years old. The accident occured during a holiday trip at the West Bay in Dorset, England.

Personality[]

Not much is known publicly about Marcus Peter Robert Welfare, however, his parents have publicly talked about him. His mother, Mrs Welfare, says that he was "...very perceptive, funny and generous and he was a wonderful, enormously loved son." His father, Robert Welfare, says that "He was very well-loved and extremely non-critical."

History[]

Marcus Pete Robert Welfare was born around 1987 and came from Morden in Surrey.

Lionhead Studios[]

Sometime around 2005, Marcus would end up working at Lionhead Studios and helped to work on many games such as Black & White 2, The Movies, Fable: The Lost Chapters and even Fable II. He would later be added to the credits of Fable Anniversary for his contributions to the first and second game.

Marcus Memorial[]

In later games such as Fable II and Fable III, a version of the song Temple of Light from Fable: The Lost Chapters was changed and then renamed in memory of Marcus Welfare. The song itself is called Marcus Memorial and was composed by Lionhead Studios' Head of Music, Russell Shaw.

Fable II Credits[]

During the credits for Fable II, the development team wrote a section stating: "in memory of Marcus Welfare."

Marcus's Poem[]

There was a book in Fable II that contains a poem written inside of it, which is named Marcus's Poem. It can be found in Fairfax Gardens over by a small column, in a clearing. The poem was written by Marcus himself, before his passing in 2006 and the developers at Lionhead Studios put it into the game as a homage to him.

Trivia[]

  • On August 9th of 2023, the franchise manager known as Ted Timmins had released a poem on Twitter that was written by Marcus Pete Robert Welfare. It was called "The Sacred Cross-hair Precision Ambition".
  • There is currently no publicly available image of what Marcus Welfare looked like.
