Big Blue Box Studios was a video game design company that was founded by Simon Carter, Dene Carter and Ian Lovett in 1999. They are primarily responsible for coming up with the original concept, which would later become the game Fable. The name was thought up at random by Dene Carter, who was struggling to come up with a name for the studio.

Eventually Big Blue Box merged with Lionhead Studios, who were also bought out by Microsoft. This led to the creation of the original Fable for the Xbox in 2004.

History[]

After the departure of Peter Molyneux from Bullfrog Productions to setup Lionhead Studios, Dene and his brother Simon Carter, along with Ian Lovett, founded Big Blue Box Studios and began development on what would become the very first Fable game in 1999. According to the Lionhead Dev Diaries, Dene Carter was struggling to think of a name for his company, so he just settled with Big Blue Box and stuck with it.

The first game that the studio tried to make was called WishWorld, an idea that was started by the brothers Dene and Simon Carter, all the way back in 1985. Despite their enthusiasm for a new type of magic based roleplaying game, which was heavily inspired by another game called Chaos: The Battle of Wizards for the ZX Spectrum, the company would actually struggle to find a publisher that would take a risk on their idea. They even tried rebranding the game and called it "Godslayer", but they still had trouble selling the concept to a publisher.
